People - Live in Central Park

Bob Merrill, Jule Styne

[spoken]
At this time I should like very much to thank my wonderful conductor
And what he does is this - it sort of reminds me of an old Mae West picture
I don't know how I make that association but -
You see, he makes this orchestra sound as if there were 70 pieces and it reminds me of the scene where Mae was teaching a classroom and she said, "Well, uh, 1+1 is 2, and 2+2 is 4, and 4+4 make 10 if you know how to work it right."
And I would also like to say that I'm thrilled and delighted
I can't believe there's 128,000 people out there
Can you imagine?
Fantastic!
Thank you
But, I would like to thank you
You lovely bunch of...

[sung]
People
People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world

We're children, needing other children
And yet letting our grown up pride
Hide all the need inside
Acting more like children than children

Lovers
Are very special people
They're the luckiest people in the world

With one person
One very special person
A feeling deep in your soul
Says you were half now you're whole
No more hunger and thirst
First, be a person who needs people
People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world

With one person
One very special person
No more hunger and thirst
First, be a person who needs people
People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world
