Decline

Avery Forrestall

Why would I ever press decline
The question rhetorical but it circles my mind
Thinking back to times
We were on floor five
I was stage four or five
I was like four-five
We were in tough times
But there was this kid
His name was Nick
He said he was also very sick, but with a smile like that you would never think
Couple years older he was the big brother I always wanted
So of course when I got it you know that we bonded
He always responded
Years went by
I would call him that's my guy
He would never hit decline
He always had the right words to say
I was in so much pain
Suicidal thoughts started ringing through my brain
He reassured me we both would both be okay
Showed me grace through the rain
And when the day came
He'd be one of my best men
Hugged me when I was in remission
Yeah that's my best friend
The years they kept going
Now Nick was voting
And I was big bro-ing
Both of us were glowing
Both of us were showing we were more than what we went through
We both had new relationships to tend to
But like once a month Nick would call me up to check in
We blessed with new directions but the same love
We reminisced about Make a Wishes like we eighty sum'n
But I was dumb enough to forget where I came from
I hit him back like "sorry bro I missed your call"
He would text me back like "no man I'm glad you're busy it ain't your fault"
We'll have plenty of time to talk when we are grumpy adults
And my family can't wait to catch up at Warren Miller this fall
You and your sisters, y'all are getting so tall
Dude I'm so proud of you, you've made it so far
I hope you know I'm proud of the young man that you are
I text him back like thanks man next time I'll make sure I have my ringer on
Why would I ever press decline
If I picked up I could of said goodbye
Why would I ever press decline
If I picked up I could of said goodbye
Eternal sunshine gotta dot the eyes
Trapped inside a thoughtless mind
If I break the cycle where you reside
The Father won't reverse the time
So I revert to blind
New stages come and I curtain climb
Traumas multiply and I devise plans so I can see the sky
See my guys
Pick the prize and not my pride
Victimize the one who won't pick up their line
Like he had a choice to die
Now you use your voice to cry
His casket you lie behind
Your alibi a trying time
Tears, wet shirts, no time to dry
Fears, they hurt, but you high fly
Babyface boy here's your high five
Your disguise
Who gave a flying fuck about trying
Until it's televised
What you really decide
On your ride or die you hit decline
Why would I ever press decline
If I picked up I could of said goodbye
Why would I ever press decline
If I picked up I could of said goodbye
If I picked up I could of said goodbye
