Stranger in the Crowd

The skyline is a silhouetted town
A hazy twilight zone
The sun goes down
One by one the all-night bars
Light up with the stars
So I go on in to see whoever’s around

I sit down at the bar in Joe’s café
The band are all set up and start to play
Then I notice across the room
In the noise the smoke the bloom
There’s a pretty girl
I look but she looks away

Stranger in the crowd
Small alert and proud
Such a pretty girl in a crowded bar
Such a pretty face
She’s so near and yet so far

Stranger in the crowd
Lonely yet so proud
Could it be the girl
Who I’ve searched for all my life
A girl a friend a lover and a wife

We dance we talk
And everything seems right
Her clear blue eyes
Are sparkling with the light
Then all at once she must go home
And she disappears alone
She’s gone among the crowd
And out of sight

Stranger in the crowd
Small alert and proud
Such a pretty girl in a crowded bar
Such a pretty face
She’s so near and yet so far

Stranger in the crowd
Lonely yet so proud
Was it love or jealous eyes
That made her go
And why she walked away
I’ll never know
Why she walked away
I’ll never know
