My Dreams Of Christmas

[Verse 1]
It started in October, about the same time as last year
Daddy quit another job and went back to drinking beer
Halloween came and went, I was a laughing stock at school
I guess a flannel shirt and holey jeans are the costume of a fool

Thanksgiving, we had lunchmeat and bread and mayonnaise
And daddy blessed the Lord all day in his own special way
The leaves of fall had held on for as long as they could hold
And even as they fell, I held my dreams of red and gold

My dreams of Christmas keep me hopeful all year long
Nothing ever works out like in the holy songs
Seems like things fall apart about this time of year
And to top it off, Santa's never been by here

On the first day of December, mama's eyes were black and blue
That seems to happen every time the rent is overdue
I asked daddy why she always bumps into the door
He said that she's just clumsy, not to bother him no more

There was no tree on Christmas eve, the living room was bare
From stories that I've read on him, maybe Santa wouldn't care
Morning came, my big bright eyes filled up with big bright tears
I didn't get the presents that I didn't get last year

They promised me the North Pole, would put gifts on layaway
They said, "We'd do our best to give you a Christmas day"
So far, it's never paid off and I take it on the chin
But this year, Santa is to blame again

My dreams of Christmas always tumble down
The truth is, things don't work out on our side of town
Should I just give up and accept the old routine?
