The Fox and the Moon

he cradles my head at night
as I fall asleep
and he keeps my teddy in sight
tells me to count the sheep
places me in my bed
carefully tucks me in
kisses me on the head
says Goodnight gingerbread
he says one two three
the fox jumped over the moon it seems
so you can dream farther farther than me
what if I drop a penny
and what if I lose a toy
he says hey you've got nothing to worry
the toy stores next door
and my wallet ain't empty
he drives me to the soccer field
lets me out the door

hiding crying shaking
he checks my foot for a scar
I push him away without thinking
