Fences

Robert Sexton Jr.

Let this be a message to my brothers and my sisters
Y'all shouldn't have to try to fit in
No one should feel like an outcast
And no one should feel like an underdog
I took the words in from my friend
Reminding me I'm best at being myself
And I stood with that notion
And I stood with that notion 'til the end of time
So let me spit some inspiration in these rhymes

Low key
I always felt I was always all on my own
I was looked at funny
The underdog on the low
Always fighting a battle
With prejudice at my throat
Secluded in my ways
To the day, I feel all alone
Used to everybody else receiving all of the clout
The stuff the popular people get praised for and about
While I was the dude who did what
the cool kids were bragging 'bout
But for me
I was always frowned upon without a doubt

No one saw me fit to bless
But always pointed me out
Same way homie did my crush
After taking her out
Bragging 'bout how quick dukes was whipping that out

And if I was popular for a moment
It left me with more opponents
People pretending to be homies
When they left me broken
When I wasn't even noticed
Girls that told me that they loved me
Like I was the one she'd chosen
Taking my virginity
For thirty minutes her moaning
Leaving me with grief
And a heart that had be stolen
All together they were phonies
Leaving me with potent omens
No more important moments
Just a poet hoping all of you have felt the pain I've spoken
Yeah
My mind has has awoken

If life is just a game
I guess I am "The Greatest Showman"
Say you cared bout my welfare
But quick to fake emotion
Sought shelter in your love
I take comfort in condolence
Comfort in your solace
But, way back when
Back then
Empathy was bogus

These days though
Cool kids are now below me
Chasing after pointless fantasies
These suckers now are goalless
The kid done got rich
And the rich are now homeless
The kid done got lit
And the rich are now hopeless

When the gun's been fired
Remember the muzzle's still smoking
People are so vicious to the point
Where they constantly are trolling
Constantly are posing
Preying on the weak minded
Preying on the broken

Preying on the outcasts
Just to start commotion
Preying on people like myself
For likes and all promotions
Mocking people crying out for help
Just to show devotion
To a brainless careless notion

Wrote this as a testament
For my youngins who are coping
Hang in there
Rafael said that life is more than golden
Never judge by the cover
If the book was never open
'Til you've read it though
Don't let your book do any kinda closing
Foreshadow for you future
'Cause life awaits foreboding
Life awaits foreboding
Don't let your book do any kind of closing

Love's some kind of drug man
Love is like a potion
Love is music on my mind
But love is not a Trojan
Looking for acceptance
But acceptance ain't a token
Advocate for change
Quit crying lil' homie
No more feeling lonely
No more feeling lonely
No more feeling lonely
Yeah
