Cost Us the Earth

Poppy Burton-Morgan

I used to buy you presents
Your room piled high with gifts
Those objects bought to compensate
To heal our petty rifts

Now all you want are price tags
And the bags of shiny things
For the short-lived and synthetic high
Consumerism brings

I wanted the best for you but you're getting the worst
Our planet is stresssed and you your future is cursed
Is every parent everywhere as terrified and in despair?
What is all this worth when all these gifts have cost us the Earth?

We're hostage to the money
And we're hostage to the need
We're hostage to a world that's almost choked by its own greed
I can contemplate the problems
It won't make them go away
The temperatures the shorelines rising higher every day

I wanted the most for you but you're getting the least
As temperatures roast for you it's famine not feast
Is every parent everywhere just losing hope and running scared
What is all this worth when every choice has cost us the Earth?

Oh child, my child
Can't find the hours to save us
Each minute is devoured
Each second of my labour
I'm giving everything, everything for you
Reset the world to set us free there's nothing I won't do

I'll keep on trying, reinventing
Simplifying, circumventing
All the while it's unrelenting
But it's true what I can do
I'll always do
It's all for you

I still want the world for you, healthy and clean
A vision and [?] for you, abundant and green
Could every parent everywhere rethink, rewind, rebuild, repair
Work for all we're worth so what we've done won't cost us the Earth

We cannot let it cost us the Earth
We will not let it cost us the Earth
We will not let it cost us the Earth
