The Summer of 2nd Grade

Playing outside, we felt so alive
Jumping ropes, riding bikes in the old neighborhood
Baseball in the park, being called home after dark
It's time for dinner (as the days had winded down, so did we)
The sky grows dimmer (living life so unabashed and simply)
Always needing more from the local candy store
We subsisted on nothing more than sugar
Smiles and cavities, popsicles and brain freeze
How I missed (the sidewalk chalk and all the bugs we would find)
That summer's kiss (exploring life in my imaginative mind)
Where have those days gone?
That summer is long gone
Flirting with our crushes, just to see their rosy blushes
We had spread an epidemic of the cooties (ew!)
Ring-pop marriages and pinky promises
She loves me, she loves me not
The pedals pile in afterthought

"Not 'till you finish your chores inside"
"Aw but mom, what if they never come back here?"
"I don't want to hear it, mister"
Mom said something witty, as I wallow in my pity
There he goes (retreating back into the distant world outside)
And all these chores (Stand in my way and keep me locked up here inside)
