History

Charles Barnes, Jr.

Let's talk about history and how you define it
Compare modern times to the past, look close enough you will find it
Is a pattern that keeps repeating like It's looped or rewinded
Centuries later we're still here
Some things need some refinement
There once was a King name Martin who led a movement
Who seeked to change conditions that clearly needed improvement
In a world full of division imagine how life would be without it
Where racism is over MLK had a dream about it
Issues still exist as we speak and then I find it strange
Of how a man of peace was a target for trying to make a change
Clearly you can see there's something wrong with this picture
God created all to unite, it says so in the scriptures
History shapes the future with each choice that is made
It's not about the hand you were dealt, sometimes it's about how it's played
Based upon our day-to-day actions and the way they're displayed
Through Malcolm, Martin, and others the foundation was laid
From the measures that we adopt our legacies are created
Any mood you're in can be swapped from feeling down to elated
Time to time you gotta keep pushing if results are belated
Even though you gave it your all and now you're feeling deflated
There's power in your choice you can be the next one to pave the way
The passion in your voice motivates the listener to save the day
Remember things you do can always be influential
Full examination of you without a doubt is essential
From every move that you make
Every route that you take
Any rule that you break
How you respond to mistakes
No matter what is at stake
Whether for theirs or your sake
You can be solid or break
Regardless sleep or awake
It's all history if it's right vs wrong
It's still history when either feuding or getting along
Considered history despite if it's a joy or unpleasant
It's called history one way or another past or the present
Malcom had a different approach in the beginning
Was a challenge keeping balance with the way that the world was spinning
He said by any means to convert defeats into winning
But the one thing about growth is your start is never your ending
Disagreeing's one thing but hatred is where the danger starts
Originally aggressive but overtime had a change of heart
With all they tried to do til this day folks still not acting right
No way you can deny there's a disconnect between blacks and whites
Throughout his quest for knowledge and struggles he came to inner peace
Learned from his mistakes figured out how to tame the inner beast
He proved that change is possible at any time to say the least
Some might say it's plausible violence one day might really cease
Both were leaders at first who didn't see eye to eye
Seeing things from different perspectives while their ending was nigh
Throughout all the confusion they're two men that we've gotta commend
They both came to the same conclusion by the time of their end
From every move that you make
Every route that you take
Any rule that you break
How you respond to mistakes
No matter what is at stake
Whether for theirs or your sake
You can be solid or break
Regardless sleep or awake
It's all history if it's right vs wrong
It's still history when either feuding or getting along
Considered history despite if it's a joy or unpleasant
It's called history one way or another past or the present
