Gravedigger Jones & Coffin Ed’s Funeral
[Interlude]
[Kid] We, the members of the Black Culture Society do hereby establish the Jones and Johnson Memorial Scholarship in Criminology, to be given annually to a deserving young brother or sister in the community. I'd like to add my personal condolences. It's a great loss for us all
[Joe Painter] I wanted to pay my respects. Thought there might be a provision for a first class funeral, with flowers and singing, coffins
[Captain] It was impossible, Mr. Painter, to obtain any remains whatsoever
[Joe Painter] Seems a shamе, and a disappointment for all their friends
[Captain] I assurе you this memorial is in keeping with proper police procedure. Detectives Jones and Johnson died honorably
[Joe Painter] Really? I had the impression that those two were sort of under a cloud
[Captain] The charges against them were dismissed
[Joe Painter] You know, I can't see how it happened. Those two were always so careful, they never took no chances
[Officer] They, they didn't have a choice. I, I sent... *cries*
[Joe Painter] Ain't that something, the way they was loved? All races, all colors
[Captain] Excuse me
[Joe Painter] Captain, tell you what I'm gonna do: I'd like to see that our fallen brothers get a fitting memorial
[Captain] Don't bother, we take care of our own
[Joe Painter] Ease up, captain, five thousand dollars oughta do 'em real proud. You know, you can always count on me as a member of the community to help out the forces of the beloved. After all, we both don't want no trouble
[Junkie] Coming for to carry me home. Gravedigger and Coffin Ed, they was mens but now they's dead. Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for and carry them home. Swing low
