Survival In Disguise

I am a sinner, oh my soul
I turn a blind eye, oh my soul

Does not the surface fail to hold?
Is not the water for too cold
Cold for me?

Through all my doubting
And all my longing
A shallow instinct
To do what serves me

But still, I know that life is not
Meant to be lived simply for me
But what is serving others if
Not just a means to feel complete
Before we die, is finding love
Just survival in disguise?
I pray for others with fingers crossed
That I may keep what I call mine

I'm a stranger, but you clothed me
I was shaken and you held me
Though you were to my left, you gave to one with less
And your actions were made right

But take no pride in what you've done for me
Because the heart seeks for self-serving means
Confine one's darkest ego, learn to let go
Embrace what it means to be free

We run into the shadows
Where our shame no longer hides
But in the light exposed
Our character now compromised

So when your joy comes from serving and not being served
Giving to the far more deserving
That's when I do my best work
